On Thursday, May 1st, 2008 my friend and husband Steve died, fourteen years after being diagnosed with a malignant brain tumor. For those who had not had the opportunity to meet him, he was perhaps the bravest man I have ever met. In addition to his courageous battle against a horrible and frightening disease, he was a Jewish man, who embraced his Judaism, which was made more authentic, more profound and more beautifully expressed through his marriage to an Irish Catholic.

Since his death, I have been moved by the outpouring of good wishes, prayers and stories of how Steve touched your lives. For most Jews, their timeless hope and vision for the day when all will live in peace depends on human action rather than divine intervention. Whether Steve was taking a new dad out to lunch, nervous about an upcoming baptism; or sharing his wisdom and experience and trust at interfaith meetings; leading a class of children in the celebration of the seder; or speaking with respect and integrity on his personal experience as a dad, as he watched his children grow in love and faith, again and again he touched the hearts and minds and spirits of those who knew him. He transformed their lives through his words and actions.

May his memory be an Everlasting memory to us all……

Eternal is Your power, O God. You are mighty to save. In loving kindness, You sustain the living. In the multitude of Your Mercies, You preserve us all. You uphold the falling and heal the sick, free the captives and keep faith with Your children, in death as in life. Who is like You, Almighty God, Author of life and death, Source of Salvation? We praise You, for You have implanted within us eternal life. Amen.
